Probus is open to partially or fully retired professional and businessmen resident in the vicinity of Chipstead. It exists to promote companionship among members through regular meetings (with refreshments) and visits to places of interest including theatres and concerts, as well as other social activities.

Membership usually numbers 55-60. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. For those recently retired, the Club provides convivial company at a time of change to routine and faces. The main activity is the monthly chat over drinks followed by a moderately priced lunch at Chipstead Golf Club.

The programme of events, to which members may bring their partners and on occasion guests consists of 3-4 daytime outings and a similar number of theatre and concert visits during the year. Transport to these is by coach from Chipstead Meads, obviating parking and drink-drive problems. For those so inclined there is a monthly walk followed by a pub lunch. Two Ladies’ Lunches are held each year at varying venues.

The Club is not affiliated to any national administration, so running costs are kept to a minimum, permitting a modest entrance fee and low annual subscription. The financial aim is simply to ensure costs are covered.

CHIDFAS (Chipstead Decorative and Fine Arts Society) covers not only Chipstead but also Banstead, Nork, Woodmansterne and the surrounding areas. This society is a member of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies, an organisation having 90,000 members. Its object is to promote the appreciation and study of the decorative and fine arts and to assist in the preservation of our national artistic heritage for the benefit of the public.

The Chipstead society, founded in 1988, arranges an annual programme of ten lectures on varying subjects. The lecturers are chosen from an extensive directory, prepared by the National Association that vet and select every speaker. They are all experts in their own specialist field of the decorative or fine arts.

We are a friendly group with a membership of 300. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month (except July and August) in the Banstead Community Hall for coffee at 9.50 am followed by a lecture.

The Programme for 2007/2008 includes lectures on Mozart, glassware, Angels & Devils – Symbols of Good and Evil in Art, Canterbury – the “ins” and “outs of a medieval walked city, Once Upon a Time in Blue and White – The Willow Pattern, The Shakers, Musical Smiles, and Caillebotte – the unknown Impressionist.

In addition to our monthly meetings we organise study days, coach outings to historic houses, art galleries etc and twice a year take groups away for trips of four or five days further afield. For Example: Visits: Eltham Palace, Terra Cotta Army, Garrick Club/London Coliseum. Short Holidays: Suffolk, Dresden/Berlin. Special Interest Day: William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement

Volunteers from CHIDFAS are currently recording all the contents of All Saints' Church in Banstead as they did the contents of St Margaret's Church in Chipstead ten years ago. We are also involved through the NADFAS Young Arts scheme in seeking to encourage 8-18 year olds locally to develop an interest in the arts.

Membership: £25 per annum. Short waiting list for membership. Visitors are welcome.

Chipstead Flower Arrangement Club

We meet on the fourth Wednesday in the month, except August and December, when we have professional flower arranging demonstrators come to entertain us. All the flower arrangements are raffled so that you may be the winner of a wonderful display of colour and artistry. The demonstrations are followed by tea and light refreshments.

There is also a competition of flower arranging for members, which is usually judged by the Demonstrator of the day. The competitions are held under the rules of the National Association of Flower Arrangers, so that all clubs comply with the same set of rules.

We meet at the Peter Aubertin Hall, and the demonstrations start at 2.15 p.m. usually finishing about 4.15 p.m. Annual subscription is £20 per year. Visitors are welcome at £4.00 per person, which includes the cost of the tea. Occasionally, when we have a National Demonstrator, we add an extra £1 to the cost.

Apart from enjoying and learning about flower arranging, our main aim is to raise money for charity, and we regularly support local organisations with their fund raising activities.

We welcome visitors and new members.
