Chipstead has been unlucky with road clearance during the recent snow. The snow this year has been more severe than in recent years, and Surrey county council’s supplies of salt were partially depleted during the earlier snowfall before Christmas.
The second period of snow began on 5 January, and there was snow on Chipstead’s roads until 15 January. Surrey CC stated that priority was being given to classified A and B roads, and routes used by emergency vehicles. Although High Road, Hazelwood Lane, Elmore Road and Coulsdon Lane are through routes, they did not fall into the above categories.
As a result, Chipstead’s roads remained in a slippery and dangerous condition for both motorists and pedestrians for about 10 days. Even the hill on Hazelwood Lane remained slippery, the snow being worn down by vehicles brave enough to try it!
Fortunately, Croydon council found the resources to keep Portnalls Road clear, a lifeline to those living in the upper part of the village.
A poor performance from our County Council.
