Surrey Hills AONB boundary review

Consultation has been published on the suggested boundary changes. Deadline for comments 13 June. Following the end of the consultation if there are no fundamental objections which cannot be overcome, the next stage will be to draw up a draft Order for the change and to publish Notice of the Order as required by Section 83(2) of the CRoW Act to allow for a further consultation. Timescale for a final decision is hard to estimate at the current time but best estimate is probably late 2024.

The Surrey Hills AONB boundary has not been reviewed since its original designation in 1958 and there have been repeated calls by local campaigners to reconsider the boundary. Following a series of landscape evaluation studies and a formal request by the Surrey Hills AONB Board, Natural England has now started the AONB boundary review process.

Local views matter and will help to inform Natural England’s decision on whether to take forward the proposals and, if so, where the boundaries should be. A summary of the responses will be published following the end of the consultation period.  The consultation runs until 13 June.

The map of the proposed boundary changes as they affect Chipstead is Fig. 20 of the Boundary maps supporting the main Consultation document.
